TACLOBAN CITY – The city government of Borongan is exploring a partnership with the EU-PH Green Economy Partnership to strengthen its efforts toward a greener and more sustainable local economy.
The proposed collaboration was discussed during a meeting on Aug. 13 at Borongan City Hall involving the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), partner agencies, and city government officials.
In a statement Friday, the city government said discussions centered on the objectives and priority programs of the EU-PH Green Economy Partnership, particularly initiatives that could help local governments adopt sustainable and environmentally responsible practices.
Implemented by the UNDP in partnership with the European Union and Philippine government agencies, the program supports the country’s transition to a circular and green economy through waste reduction, resource and energy efficiency, and increased use of clean and renewable energy.
UNDP identified Borongan as a potential partner in Eastern Samar because of its existing programs promoting sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
“The partnership is expected to complement the city’s existing environmental initiatives while opening opportunities to develop and strengthen projects aligned with the green economy agenda,” the city government said.
Borongan’s ongoing sustainability initiatives include renewable energy projects, community forestry, climate adaptation programs, mangrove planting, and environmental conservation efforts. The city has also deployed former loggers as forest rangers to help protect forest areas.
The EU-PH Green Economy Partnership will run from 2023 to 2028 and is supported by a EUR60 million grant from the European Union. It aims to help the Philippines build a resource-efficient economy that produces less waste and increasingly relies on clean energy.
For Borongan, the proposed partnership could provide opportunities to expand existing environmental programs and further align local development efforts with the country’s transition toward a green economy.
