Currimao Strengthens Farmers’ Safety Net With Free Insurance Program

CURRIMAO, Ilocos Norte — Around 1,800 farmers and fisherfolk in this municipality are set to benefit from free life and agricultural insurance as the local government steps up efforts to protect livelihoods from accidents, natural disasters and other unexpected financial setbacks.

Municipal Agriculturist Erickson Biag said Friday that the initiative, implemented in partnership with the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC), aims to extend insurance protection to all eligible farmers and fisherfolk in Currimao.

The program covers risks that commonly threaten agricultural and fishing communities, including accidental death, natural calamities, crop losses and other livelihood-related emergencies.

Biag said the municipal government has again set aside PHP200,000 for the insurance initiative, similar to last year’s allocation.

He said providing insurance at no cost to beneficiaries is part of the municipality’s broader effort to strengthen the social protection system for families whose incomes depend heavily on farming and fishing.

Farmers and fisherfolk remain particularly vulnerable to typhoons, droughts, floods, pests and other hazards that can abruptly disrupt production and household income. Insurance provides a financial buffer that can help affected families recover and resume their livelihoods.

Under the program, qualified beneficiaries will receive assistance in obtaining both life and agricultural insurance, providing protection while they continue contributing to food production and the local economy.

Registration is currently ongoing. Interested farmers and fisherfolk may coordinate with the Municipal Agriculture Office for enrollment and other requirements.

The initiative reflects Currimao’s continuing effort to promote inclusive social protection while building stronger and more resilient agricultural and fishing communities.

For farmer Rainy Valente of Comcomloong village, the program provides more than financial assistance—it offers reassurance to families whose livelihoods are exposed to risks beyond their control.

“Thank you to the municipal government of Currimao for the love of farmers and fisherfolk. This means a lot to us for our safety and protection,” Valente said.

Through the program, the municipal government hopes to ensure that when disaster strikes, farmers and fisherfolk will have a stronger safety net to help them recover and continue providing food and income for their communities.
