WASHINGTON – The New York Knicks ended a 53-year wait for an NBA championship after defeating the San Antonio Spurs, 94-90, in Game 5 of the Finals on Saturday to secure the series, 4-1.
Jalen Brunson delivered a standout performance with a game-high 45 points and three assists, leading New York to another comeback victory on the road and helping the franchise capture its first title since 1973.
Josh Hart contributed a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Mikal Bridges added 14 points. OG Anunoby chipped in 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals in the championship-clinching win.
The Spurs received a strong effort from rookie Dylan Harper, who scored 25 points off the bench. Victor Wembanyama recorded 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks, while Julian Champagnie finished with 14 points.
San Antonio controlled much of the game early, building a 23-13 lead after the opening quarter and taking a 42-37 advantage into halftime. The Spurs extended their lead to double digits in the third period and entered the final quarter ahead, 72-65.
However, the Knicks mounted a late surge behind Brunson, who tied the contest with a layup midway through the fourth quarter before giving New York the lead with crucial free throws.
Despite Karl-Anthony Towns fouling out late in the game, Mitchell Robinson secured a pivotal offensive rebound in the closing minute, while Anunoby converted key free throws to help seal the victory.
The championship marks the third NBA title in franchise history for New York and ends one of the league’s longest title droughts.
US President Donald Trump congratulated the Knicks on their championship run in a post on Truth Social, commending team owner Jim Dolan and the club’s postseason performance.
“What a year it has been but, even more so, what incredible playoff wins we have all witnessed,” Trump wrote, while also praising Brunson and several other Knicks players for their contributions throughout the playoffs.
