Department of Science and Technology launches smart agri, innovation hubs in Central Visayas

CEBU CITY – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has launched two new technology hubs in Central Visayas to strengthen the region’s innovation ecosystem and support smart agriculture.

The newly launched hubs include the Central Visayas Smart AgriTech Hub, also known as the SARAi Regional Hub, and the Innovation Hub Central Visayas (iHub CV).

Sancho A. Mabborang, DOST undersecretary for regional operations, led the launch and said the initiative aims to bring science, technology, and innovation closer to communities, including farms, startups, and industries.

The SARAi Regional Hub is part of Project SARAi, a DOST-funded program led by University of the Philippines Los Baños that promotes smart farming using science-based tools and technologies.

The hub provides farmers with data-driven solutions to improve productivity, increase efficiency, and enhance climate resilience. These include satellite-based crop monitoring, real-time weather data from automated stations, and digital advisory platforms.

According to Decibel Eslava, program leader of the SARAi Centralized National Hub, the system tracks crop growth, planting areas, and potential yields, while also supporting pest identification and irrigation management.

Meanwhile, the iHub CV focuses on strengthening the region’s startup ecosystem by supporting innovations in artificial intelligence, smart systems, and emerging industries.

The hub follows a four-pronged strategy—Inspire, Interact, Ideate, and Initiate—to assist innovators, entrepreneurs, and micro, small, and medium enterprises in developing ideas into viable startups and connecting them with industry partners.

Tristan L. Abando, DOST-7 regional director, said the initiative is part of the agency’s broader mission to ensure that science and technology benefit communities and drive inclusive development.

DOST has allocated PHP140 million this year to support 82 innovation hubs nationwide as part of its continuing push to advance innovation across the country
