Speaking during a press conference following the 48th ASEAN Summit in Lapu-Lapu City on Friday, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said member nations committed to ensuring the continuous movement of essential goods across the region while maintaining open, stable, and predictable markets.
“Leaders agreed to keep essential goods moving, maintain open and predictable markets, strengthen intra-ASEAN trade, and reinforce regional food security mechanisms,” Marcos emphasized.
The President noted that the effects of rising fuel prices, increasing fertilizer costs, and disruptions in global shipping routes are placing additional pressure on households and economies throughout Southeast Asia.
To address these growing concerns, ASEAN leaders pledged to strengthen regional supply chains, expand support for agricultural micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), empower smallholder farmers, and accelerate the adoption of climate-smart agriculture initiatives across the region.
The summit also highlighted the importance of enhancing ASEAN-led food reserve systems to help member states respond more effectively during emergencies and supply shortages.
Marcos further underscored the urgency of ratifying the upgraded ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA), a key regional trade framework designed to modernize trade policies and reduce non-tariff barriers among member countries.
According to the President, the enhanced agreement includes crisis-response provisions aimed at ensuring the uninterrupted flow of essential goods during emergencies, while also addressing supply chain resilience, digital trade development, and green economy initiatives.
The revised ATIGA, finalized in 2025, is expected to strengthen ASEAN’s role in global production networks while supporting sustainable economic growth throughout the region.
Food security remains one of the Philippines’ top priorities during its ASEAN chairmanship this year, alongside energy stability and the protection of ASEAN nationals abroad.
