A recent survey by Gallup shows that more than half of Americans are experiencing increased financial pressure, with many expressing concerns about managing everyday expenses.
The poll found that 55% of respondents in 2026 said their financial situation is worsening—an increase from 53% the previous year and 47% in 2024—marking the fifth consecutive year that more Americans report declining finances rather than improvement. Analysts noted that a similar trend was last seen during the Great Recession.
Concerns about long-term financial security remain high. Around 62% of respondents are worried about having enough savings for retirement, while 60% fear they may struggle to cover medical expenses in the event of serious illness or accidents. Additionally, 54% expressed concerns about maintaining their standard of living and investment performance.
Short-term financial pressures are also evident. Nearly half of those surveyed reported concerns over routine healthcare costs, while 41% are worried about paying monthly bills and 40% about affording college expenses.
The survey highlighted that affordability issues—such as rising costs of housing, energy, healthcare, and education—are the most significant challenges facing households today. Increasing consumer prices have already impacted about 55% of respondents, with more people citing concerns about fuel costs compared to the previous year.
Overall, the findings point to growing awareness of financial challenges among Americans, emphasizing the importance of stability and effective economic planning moving forward.
