Iloilo City Expands Grassroots Sports Program with Athlete Scholarships

ILOILO CITY — The Iloilo City government is strengthening its grassroots sports development by opening new scholarship opportunities for student-athletes through a structured training program.

Recently approved by the Sangguniang Panlungsod, the initiative formalizes a partnership that will link selected junior and senior high school students to a program that combines academic education with competitive sports training.

City officials said the effort is part of a long-term strategy to identify and nurture athletic talent at an early stage, providing access to professional coaching, training facilities, and higher-level competition.

Under the program, the partner institution will shoulder major expenses, including tuition, accommodation, meals, equipment, and other training needs. Meanwhile, the city government will focus on promoting the program and ensuring that qualified students are informed and able to apply.

Beyond competition, the initiative aims to support the overall development of young athletes. Participants will receive academic assistance alongside sports training, as well as access to medical and sports science services to maintain peak performance.

Officials also highlighted the program’s role in expanding opportunities for Ilonggo youth, especially those who may lack the financial means to pursue advanced athletic training.

Covering a range of disciplines—from athletics and swimming to combat sports and gymnastics—the program seeks to develop future champions while reinforcing the city’s commitment to inclusive youth development and sports excellence.
