Castillo’s Windsurfing Silver Keeps PH in Third at Asian Beach Games

SANYA, ChinaDhenver John Castillo delivered a silver medal performance in windsurfing, helping the Philippines maintain its hold on third place overall at the Asian Beach Games on Tuesday.

Castillo finished second in the boys’ foil windsurfing event at Sanya Bay Haihong Square, adding to the country’s medal tally. The young windsurfer, who previously won gold at the Southeast Asian Games, tallied 39 net points after 13 heats in a tightly contested race.

He tied Thailand’s Wachirawit Thonup in points but settled for silver after placing second in the final race. The 14th heat was canceled due to unfavorable weather conditions.

At press time, Team Philippines remained third in the overall standings with three gold, three silver, and two bronze medals. Host China continued to dominate the medal table, followed by Thailand in second place.

“Training is really hard—you have to persevere and give your all in competitions,” Castillo said, noting the higher level of competition against Asia’s best athletes.

Meanwhile, the Gilas Pilipinas 3x3 men’s and women’s squads both advanced to the semifinals. The men’s team defeated India, 18-14, while the women’s team overcame Kazakhstan, 16-11, in their respective quarterfinal matches.

In beach wrestling, the Philippine team faced a challenging start. Abby Balisme secured a win in the women’s 60kg knockout round against Singapore’s Danielle Lim but later fell in the round-robin stage. Other Filipino wrestlers, including Aliah Gavalez and Callum Roberts, also suffered early defeats in their divisions.

Despite the setbacks, the athletes remained optimistic. “It’s a great experience for all of us—not just in the sport, but for individual growth,” Roberts said.

More Filipino bets, including Joe Fer Callado and Neonards Cervantes, are still set to compete, with hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals.

In sport climbing at the Tianya Haijiao Venue Cluster, the Philippine contingent fell short in the qualification rounds, with none advancing to the finals.

With the competition nearing its final day, the Philippines continues to push for additional medals to secure its podium standing.
