The Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA) has strengthened its partnership with the Global United Nations Association of the Philippines (UNAP) to advance programs supporting women farmers and agricultural volunteers.
During a courtesy call on Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. on April 27, the Global UNAP delegation—led by its president, Ric Cruz—presented a resolution declaring a dedicated year recognizing women farmers, rangeland workers, and pastoralists. The initiative highlights the critical role of women in ensuring food security and promoting sustainable agriculture.
The group also introduced its plans and new branding for the 2026 UN International Year of Volunteers, which honors individuals who contribute their time and effort to community development, including those in the agri-fishery sector.
According to the DA’s Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Point System, the meeting marks a significant step in aligning the country’s agricultural and gender-focused initiatives with global priorities. The collaboration aims to ensure that inclusive, gender-responsive programs remain central to the Philippines’ agricultural development agenda.
Representing the DA-GAD Focal Point System were Undersecretary and Chief of Staff Alvin John Balagbag, along with Karen Kristine Roscom, director of the DA Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards and chairperson of its National Technical Working Group.
