SteelAsia signs 8-MWp solar deal for major Cebu rooftop project

MANILA — SteelAsia Manufacturing Corporation has partnered with Buskowitz Energy to develop an 8-megawatt peak (MWp) solar facility in Compostela, Cebu, positioning it as the largest single-roof rooftop solar installation for heavy industries in the Philippines.

The Compostela Works Solar Rooftop Project, targeted for completion by November, will span around 65,560 square meters and feature 12,888 solar panels along with 54 inverters.

Once operational, the facility is expected to generate about 12,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean energy annually—enough to supply roughly 25 percent of the plant’s electricity needs. The company estimates the project will reduce carbon emissions by approximately 8,400 metric tons each year.

SteelAsia said the environmental impact over five years would be equivalent to recycling 73,500 tons of waste, offsetting hundreds of millions of kilometers driven by vehicles, or avoiding the consumption of around 90 million liters of gasoline.

SteelAsia Executive Vice Chairman Andre Sy noted that the company has long utilized renewable energy sources such as hydroelectric and geothermal power, and is now expanding into solar energy for its efficiency and practicality.

He added that the Compostela facility is the company’s second mill to adopt solar technology, with plans to implement similar systems in other sites.

Under the agreement, Buskowitz Energy will oversee the project’s engineering, procurement, and construction, as well as operations, maintenance, and asset management—supporting SteelAsia’s push toward more sustainable and efficient operations.

Buskowitz Energy CEO James Buskowitz highlighted SteelAsia’s role in national development and emphasized the shared commitment of both companies to sustainability, operational efficiency, and long-term impact.
