New Attractions, Shared Spaces Drive Rising Foot Traffic at Camp John Hay

BAGUIO CITYCamp John Hay is expected to see a continued rise in visitor numbers as more shared spaces and attractions are introduced within the facility, an official said.

We’ve noticed that with more common areas and free facilities, more people are visiting the camp. The reopening of the improved playground has also helped boost foot traffic,” said Manjit Singh Reandi, president and chief executive officer of John Hay Management Corp., in an interview with the Philippine News Agency on Tuesday.

Among the new attractions drawing visitors are Ayuyang Park and Tranquility Park, adding to existing features like bazaars that serve as livelihood programs in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Reandi said even small businesses inside the camp are seeing improved sales, while reports from larger hotels are still being awaited. To ensure sustained growth, the management has begun weekly and monthly monitoring of visitor trends and business conditions.

Recent data from Camp John Hay showed a significant increase in foot traffic:

  • January 2026: 800,000 visitors (up from 500,000 in January 2025)
  • February 2026: 600,000 visitors (up from 500,000 last year)
  • March 2026: 600,000 visitors (higher than 500,000 in March 2025, despite missing the 800,000 target)

Even if we didn’t hit our target, the numbers still show growth,” Reandi said, noting that an energy crisis may have affected the March turnout.

Visitors from nearby areas such as La Trinidad, Itogon, Sablan, Tuba, Tublay, as well as provinces like Pangasinan, La Union, and Tarlac, have also contributed to the increased foot traffic.

Management emphasized that continuous monitoring allows them to respond quickly with programs and initiatives to support business locators and maintain economic stability within the camp.

We’re doing well for now, but the future is unpredictable. We remain proactive in identifying potential issues and implementing immediate solutions,” Reandi added.

The upcoming opening of the Grafik Hotel Collection, featuring a modern theme and multi-cuisine restaurant, is also expected to enhance the camp’s appeal while complementing its tranquil atmosphere.

Reandi revealed that Camp John Hay has received numerous investment inquiries from local, national, and foreign companies, citing its steady market, consistent foot traffic, and stable economic activity.

However, he clarified that all potential developments must align with the plans of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority to ensure they complement the camp’s identity and long-term vision.

Meanwhile, the e-shuttle loop service is set to return once a comprehensive safety review is completed, following a January incident.

The camp is also advancing environmental protection initiatives, including efforts to reduce air pollution. Reandi noted the increasing use of vehicle battery charging stations, encouraging visitors to park and explore the area on foot, which benefits both the environment and public health.
