Department of Agriculture partners with Megawide Construction Corp. to modernize agri sector

MANILA – The Department of Agriculture is pushing to modernize the country’s agricultural sector through stronger collaboration with the private sector, aiming to improve food security and increase farmers’ income.

The agency recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Megawide Construction Corp. to develop integrated agricultural infrastructure. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the partnership supports the government’s vision of building a sustainable and modern farming system.

The project includes the rollout of agro-solar farming, combining crop production with renewable energy generation. It also covers the development of food-processing facilities and modern food terminals to enhance storage, logistics, and distribution across the agricultural supply chain.

Officials expect the initiative to reduce post-harvest losses by 30 to 50 percent, addressing a long-standing issue that affects farmers’ earnings and market competitiveness. The program will also promote clustered farming, allowing small farmers to collaborate, access advanced technologies, and shift toward commercial-scale agribusiness.

The effort is part of a broader strategy to transform farmers into agri-entrepreneurs while integrating agriculture with energy, logistics, and industrial systems for long-term growth.
