Japan Secures First U.S. Crude Shipment to Strengthen Energy Supply

Japan has received its first shipment of crude oil from the United States in response to rising geopolitical tensions and supply concerns linked to Iran.

A tanker carrying approximately 910,000 barrels of U.S. crude arrived at an offshore facility in Tokyo Bay, marking a strategic move to diversify the country’s energy sources. The shipment comes amid disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil transport.

The cargo, procured by Cosmo Oil Co., departed from Texas in late March and traveled through the Panama Canal before reaching Japan after about a month at sea.

The oil will be transported via an undersea pipeline to a refinery in Chiba operated by Cosmo Energy Holdings Co., where it will be processed into petroleum products such as gasoline for domestic use.

Although the shipment represents less than a day’s consumption for Japan, it signals a broader effort to strengthen energy security. Japan currently relies on the Middle East for over 90 percent of its crude oil imports, making diversification increasingly urgent amid regional instability.

The government is now accelerating plans to source oil from alternative regions, including North and South America and Central Asia, while also exploring Middle Eastern routes that bypass the Strait of Hormuz. Imports from the United States are expected to increase significantly in the coming months as part of this strategy.
