SANYA, China – The Philippines has officially secured the hosting rights for the 7th Asian Beach Games (ABG) in 2028, with Cebu set to serve as the main venue following the signing of the hosting agreement by key sports officials.
The contract signing was led by Abraham Tolentino, president of the Philippine Olympic Committee, during a ceremony at the Conifer Resort in Sanya, China. He was joined by Olympic Council of Asia President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani.
Tolentino said preparations are already underway not only for the 2028 Asian Beach Games in Cebu but also for the Southeast Asian Plus Youth Games scheduled in December 2027 in Manila. He described both events as major milestones for Philippine sports tourism and international hosting capability.
He noted that official logos and mascots for both events are expected to be unveiled in June during a coordination meeting, as planning efforts continue in coordination with stakeholders.
The initiative is supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, led by chairperson Patrick “Pato” Gregorio, and aligns with the government’s broader sports tourism program under the National Sports Tourism Inter-Agency Committee.
Tolentino emphasized that the SEA Plus Youth Games will feature Under-16 athletes from Southeast Asia and other regions, including Central Asia and the Middle East, while the Asian Beach Games will further highlight the Philippines’ growing strength in beach and sand-based sports.
He added that the country’s current performance in Sanya reinforces its readiness to host major international competitions, noting the Philippines’ strong showing in beach and sand disciplines.
With the hosting rights now formalized, Cebu is expected to prepare major infrastructure and event support systems in the lead-up to the 2028 continental beach sports showcase.
