SANYA, China – The Gilas Pilipinas 3x3 men’s and women’s teams both secured quarterfinal berths in their respective competitions, helping sustain the Philippines’ strong medal campaign in the 6th Asian Beach Games on Monday.
The country remains in third place overall, tallying three gold, two silver, and two bronze medals in the 45-nation continental meet, based on the latest unofficial standings. Host China leads the medal table with 14 gold, 11 silver, and four bronze, while Thailand follows in second with four gold, five silver, and three bronze.
The Philippine delegation is backed by the Philippine Olympic Committee under president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino and the Philippine Sports Commission led by chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio.
The country’s gold medals so far came from jiu-jitsu athletes Annie Ramirez and Alexandria Luz Enriquez, and high jumper Leonard Grospe. Additional silver medals were contributed by Emily Thomas in jiu-jitsu and the women’s relay team composed of Jessica Rose Laurance, Kristina Marie Knott, Lianne Diana Pama, and Shane Poince. Bronze medals were also secured by Laurance in the 60-meter dash and Kaila Napolis in jiu-jitsu.
In men’s 3x3 basketball, Gilas Pilipinas absorbed a 14-21 loss to Iran but still advanced to the quarterfinals after finishing in a three-way tie with Iran and China in Pool A. The Filipinos topped the group via superior accumulated points, finishing with a 2-1 record.
Coach Patrick Fran credited the team’s effort and preparation, saying their strong start in the tournament helped them secure the top spot in their group and build momentum heading into the knockout stage. Jeff Manday led the scoring with eight points, while Nic Cabañero added six.
The Gilas women’s 3x3 team also advanced after sweeping Group C, including a 21-15 win over Kyrgyzstan. After a slow start, the Filipinas tightened their defense and relied on key contributions from veterans Mikka Cacho and Tantoy Ferrer, along with Gabi Bade and Kaye Pingol.
Bade stressed that defense was the key to their comeback victory, adding that no opponent should be underestimated in the knockout rounds. Ferrer led the team with eight points, followed by Cacho with seven.
Both Gilas squads now await their respective quarterfinal opponents.
Elsewhere, Philippine beach volleyball teams and teqball pairs bowed out of contention after early exits, while other national athletes continue to compete in remaining events.
The Philippines’ campaign is set to continue as it aims to improve its medal standing in the remainder of the tournament.
