DOLE Intensifies Workplace Safety, Mental Health Efforts in Cagayan Valley

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Region 2 is stepping up efforts to protect workers across Cagayan Valley by strengthening workplace safety standards and promoting mental health and well-being.

Assistant Regional Director Remedios Vegim-Teves said the agency continues to enforce labor laws, including proper wages, benefits, and humane working hours, while ensuring occupational safety and health compliance in workplaces.

She stressed that workers face not only physical risks but also psychosocial hazards, such as:

  • Heavy workloads
  • Unclear job roles
  • Poor communication
  • Unfair treatment and harassment
  • Lack of supervisory support

“These conditions can lead to stress, which affects not only mental health but also workplace safety and productivity,” Vegim-Teves said.

To address these challenges, DOLE is urging employers to implement:

  • Reasonable workload distribution
  • Clear job expectations
  • Open communication systems, including feedback and grievance mechanisms

The agency also emphasized the need for supportive supervision, fair treatment, and strict enforcement of policies against workplace harassment and bullying. Employers are advised to establish safe reporting systems and ensure workers are protected from retaliation.

DOLE conducts regular inspections of establishments and responds promptly to complaints. Businesses found violating labor laws must correct deficiencies or face possible penalties.

In line with the World Day for Safety and Health at Work on April 28, 2026, DOLE Region 2 has organized activities to promote workplace safety, health, and overall well-being in both public and private sectors.

Key activities include:

  • A panel discussion on psychosocial risks, featuring experts addressing issues such as burnout, harassment, job insecurity, and performance pressure
  • A “Sayaw Galaw for Workplace Safety” TikTok dance challenge at Robinsons Place Tuguegarao to raise awareness through creative engagement
  • A vlog contest, “Ligtas Ako sa Trabaho Ko,” highlighting best practices in workplace safety
  • A medical mission under the theme “Healthy Workers, Strong Organizations”, open to the public and informal workers

As part of the observance, establishments are encouraged to join “Isang Oras Para sa Trabahong Ligtas” from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. on April 28. The activity includes:

  • 15 minutes of wellness exercises
  • Workplace safety checks, such as cleaning, decluttering, and organizing

Through these initiatives, DOLE aims to build safer, healthier, and more supportive work environments across Cagayan Valley.
