DA-13 maps vulnerable Caraga farms ahead of El Niño impact

BUTUAN CITY – The Department of Agriculture in the Caraga Region (DA-13) is taking early steps to lessen the possible effects of El Niño by identifying rice and corn areas most at risk across the region.

Gerlie Antipaso, the agency’s disaster risk reduction focal person, said data gathering is underway to pinpoint rainfed municipalities and determine which barangays are most vulnerable.

She noted that about 57 percent of rice farms in the region rely on rainfed conditions, making them highly susceptible to dry spells. Farms located at the far end of irrigation systems are also considered at risk.

As of April 15, DA-13 has recorded 17,228 hectares of rainfed rice fields and 1,897 hectares in upland areas. In addition, 1,109 hectares of corn farms are situated in rain-dependent zones and near riverbanks, increasing their exposure to drought conditions.

To prepare for the expected dry period, the agency is securing quality seeds to strengthen its buffer stock. Currently, 1,720 bags of certified rice seeds and 1,950 bags of hybrid seeds are ready for distribution.

Antipaso said procurement efforts are continuing to ensure adequate supply, while bidding for additional corn seeds has already been completed to support farmers who may be affected.

The agency is also working with its engineering division to maximize existing impounding projects for water harvesting, which can still collect water from localized thunderstorms.

She noted that recent heavy rains in Butuan City and nearby areas brought by localized thunderstorms highlight the importance of capturing and storing water as the dry season progresses.
