Meta Platforms and Microsoft cut jobs amid growing AI investments

ISTANBUL – Major tech companies Meta Platforms and Microsoft have announced workforce reductions as they restructure operations while increasing investments in artificial intelligence (AI).

Meta plans to lay off about 10 percent of its workforce, equivalent to around 8,000 employees, and will also eliminate thousands of unfilled positions. The company said the move is aimed at improving efficiency and supporting its growing investments in AI technologies such as large language models and chatbots.

Chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg has been prioritizing AI development, with the company expecting higher spending on infrastructure and partnerships this year. Affected employees will receive compensation packages and assistance.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to up to 7 percent of its workforce in the United States. The program targets eligible employees as part of efforts to adapt to industry changes driven by AI and to revise internal systems.

The company is also increasing investments in data centers to support expanding AI services, reflecting a broader trend among global technology firms adjusting their workforce while focusing on artificial intelligence growth.
