Digital technology brings Japanese “yokai” to life at immersive art exhibit in Tokyo

TOKYO – A new immersive exhibition in Tokyo is using advanced digital technology to bring traditional Japanese “yokai,” or supernatural creatures, to life.

The “Yokai Immersive Experience Exhibition Tokyo,” held at Warehouse Terrada, features over 300 yokai inspired by historical artworks such as emaki scrolls and ukiyo-e prints. Well-known creatures like the Kappa and Nurarihyon are showcased across themed rooms.

Using projection mapping, 3D visuals, and surround sound, the exhibit transforms classic illustrations from the Edo and Meiji periods into interactive experiences. Visitors can walk through spaces where these mythical figures appear on walls and floors, creating the feeling of stepping into a different world.

Organizers said the exhibition highlights the connection between traditional yokai art and modern Japanese pop culture, including manga and anime. Works by renowned artists like Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Katsushika Hokusai are displayed alongside contemporary interpretations.

The event aims to preserve and promote Japanese cultural heritage by presenting it in a modern, engaging format. It also encourages visitors to explore the historical context of yokai and discover new perspectives through technology-driven storytelling.

The exhibition will run until June 28, offering both local and international visitors a unique blend of culture, art, and innovation.
