TOKYO – A Tokyo court has ordered Zoom Video Communications and its Japanese sales partner to pay around 182 million yen in damages for violating the trademark of Zoom Corporation.
The case was filed by the Japanese firm, which claimed that the US company’s logo closely resembled its registered trademark. While the court recognized the similarity between the two logos and acknowledged the possibility of confusion, it ruled that such risk significantly decreased after mid-2020 due to the global popularity of the US company’s video conferencing service during the pandemic.
The Japanese company had earlier requested the US firm to stop using the logo in 2020, but after the request was denied, it pursued legal action in 2021. Although the court awarded damages for losses incurred between 2016 and 2020, it rejected the request to block further use of the logo.
The ruling highlights the growing importance of intellectual property protection, especially as global technology companies expand and gain widespread recognition.
