The Philippine Embassy in Rome highlighted the richness of Filipino cuisine with the launch of the 3rd Filipino Food and Restaurant Guide, titled “From Home to Rome: Filipino Cuisine in the Eternal City,” alongside a celebration of Filipino Food Month.
Held in Rome in partnership with the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Tourism, the event aimed to promote Filipino culture, cuisine, and entrepreneurship through cultural diplomacy.
Distinguished guests included Qu Dongyu of the Food and Agriculture Organization, along with representatives from the World Food Programme and the International Fund for Agricultural Development, as well as members of the Filipino community.
The updated guide now features additional Filipino-owned restaurants in Rome, including Ka-Pamilya Filipino Restobar, Kusinang Capampangan, and Tambayan Filipino Restaurant & Cocktail Bar. Beyond listing dining spots, the guide highlights the stories of Filipino restaurateurs bringing authentic Philippine flavors to an international audience.
Philippine Ambassador Neal Imperial emphasized that food serves as a powerful bridge between cultures and a meaningful expression of identity, noting the growing global recognition of Filipino cuisine.
A key highlight of the event was the spotlight on the pili nut, a native crop from the Bicol Region and parts of the Visayas. Known for its nutritional value and versatility, the pili nut was featured in innovative creations, including gelato flavors developed by Gel'Istria and Gelateria Formaessenza. Unique offerings such as chili vanilla with salted caramel pili nuts and vegan pili gelato showcased how Filipino ingredients can blend with Italy’s renowned culinary traditions.
In his remarks, Qu Dongyu described food as a reflection of culture and shared human experience, highlighting the pili nut as a symbol of Filipino identity. He also stressed the importance of food diplomacy in fostering global understanding and cooperation.
The event also underscored the potential of the Philippine pili industry to support sustainable livelihoods while increasing global awareness of indigenous crops.
More than a culinary showcase, the initiative reflected how food connects Filipinos abroad to their roots. In a country like Italy, where cuisine is deeply embedded in daily life, the growing presence of Filipino restaurants highlights the community’s cultural integration and entrepreneurial spirit.
Through this initiative, the Philippine Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cultural ties between Philippines and Italy, while elevating Filipino food, heritage, and innovation on the global stage.
