An immersive art event in Tokyo is bringing traditional Japanese folklore to life by blending history with advanced digital technology, offering visitors a unique cultural experience.
The “Yokai Immersive Experience Exhibition Tokyo,” held at Warehouse Terrada, features digitally recreated “yokai”—supernatural creatures from Japanese folklore—drawn from classical “emaki” scrolls and “ukiyo-e” woodblock prints. The exhibition showcases over 300 yokai, including well-known figures like kappa and nurarihyon.
Using projection mapping and immersive sound, the event transforms artworks from the Edo period and Meiji period into vivid, moving displays across eight themed rooms. Visitors can walk through scenes where legendary creatures appear to come alive on walls and floors, creating a fully interactive environment.
The exhibition also highlights the influence of yokai on modern Japanese pop culture, including manga and anime. Works by renowned artists such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Katsushika Hokusai are featured alongside contemporary interpretations, allowing visitors to explore the evolution of yokai imagery through time.
A major highlight includes Kuniyoshi’s famous ukiyo-e print Soma no Furudairi, known for its dramatic depiction of a giant skeleton emerging from darkness—an image that blends eerie tension with subtle humor.
The exhibition concludes with modern works from the Yokai Art Museum, showcasing how contemporary artists continue to reinterpret these mythical beings. According to organizers, presenting yokai in engaging and creative formats helps introduce this unique aspect of Japanese culture to global audiences.
Running through June 28, the event offers easy access near Tennozu Isle stations and includes English-language support, making it accessible to international visitors. Discounts are also available for guests wearing traditional attire such as kimono or yukata, further enhancing the cultural experience.
