IPOPHL Eyes Stronger LGU Partnership to Intensify Anti-Counterfeiting Efforts

MANILA — The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines is set to strengthen its collaboration with local government units (LGUs) to curb the spread of counterfeit goods across the country.

IPOPHL Director General Teodoro Pascua said the agency plans to work closely with LGUs, positioning them at the forefront of both enforcement and public education campaigns against counterfeiting. The move aligns with broader government efforts, as the Department of the Interior and Local Government is part of the National Committee on Intellectual Property Rights.

Pascua acknowledged that IPOPHL faces manpower limitations, making it difficult to monitor illegal activities nationwide without local support. By partnering with LGUs, the agency aims to expand its reach and improve both enforcement and awareness initiatives.

He also emphasized the importance of equipping local governments with the knowledge to detect how businesses may attempt to bypass regulations, noting that collaboration would significantly advance anti-counterfeiting efforts.

Earlier reports from IPOPHL showed that authorities confiscated PHP472.61 million worth of counterfeit goods in the first quarter of 2026 through joint operations with the Philippine National Police. In 2025, total seizures reached PHP29.97 billion, underscoring the scale of the issue.

The agency believes that stronger coordination with LGUs will be key to sustaining enforcement gains and protecting intellectual property rights nationwide.
