NCIP Condemns Misuse of Indigenous Attire at Bukidnon Festival

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — The Bukidnon provincial office of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) has called for greater cultural awareness and respect following a controversy during a recent event at the Kaamulan Festival.

NCIP Bukidnon officer Ronaldo Baya-on expressed disappointment over the inappropriate use of indigenous cultural symbols, stressing that these items hold deep historical and spiritual significance for indigenous communities. He said treating such symbols as mere decorations, especially for entertainment or commercial purposes, disregards their true value and violates the respect owed to indigenous peoples.

The issue arose on April 16 when traditional costumes and accessories were used to adorn lechon (roast pig) displays in one of the festival’s side events. The act sparked criticism and concern among members of the indigenous community.

The Kaamulan Festival, an annual celebration in Bukidnon, highlights the traditions of seven indigenous tribes, each with distinct cultural identities reflected in their attire and ornaments, many of which are considered sacred.

In response, the NCIP urged event organizers and non-indigenous participants to practice cultural sensitivity, particularly as the festival continues to gain commercial and mainstream attention.
