URAYASU, Chiba — Tokyo DisneySea celebrated its 25th anniversary with a ceremony featuring Mickey Mouse and other beloved Disney characters, adding to the festive atmosphere.
The milestone comes as total visitors to the park and its neighboring Tokyo Disneyland surpassed 900 million earlier this year, reflecting the resort’s enduring popularity.
Wataru Takahashi, president of Oriental Land Company, expressed gratitude to guests and stakeholders, crediting their continued support for the park’s success over the years.
Opened in September 2001, Tokyo DisneySea is known for its unique, sea-themed attractions distinct from Tokyo Disneyland. However, like many global attractions, it faced setbacks during the COVID-19 pandemic, including a four-month closure in 2020 that led to financial losses for its operator.
Since reopening, visitor numbers have rebounded, supported by efforts to manage crowd levels and improve guest experience. The launch of the Fantasy Springs expansion in 2024 has also helped boost repeat visits, with officials noting a high return rate among guests.
Despite these gains, challenges remain. Industry observers point to concerns over maintaining service quality amid staffing shortages and rising ticket prices, which now exceed JPY10,000 during peak periods under a variable pricing system.
As Tokyo DisneySea moves forward, it aims to balance profitability with delivering a high-quality entertainment experience, ensuring it continues to attract both new and returning visitors.
