UP’s Fernandez advances to Philta Men’s Open quarterfinals

Lance Jacob Fernandez of the University of the Philippines continued his strong run in the Philta Men's Open, defeating fourth seed Vicente Elberto Anasta, 6-2, 6-4, in the round of 16 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The 13th-seeded Fernandez, a 20-year-old AB History student, credited his solid serving and consistent forehand for the win. He also expressed admiration for Anasta, citing his experience and skill as among the toughest on the local tennis circuit.

Fernandez now heads into the quarterfinals, where he will face eighth seed Ronard Joven, who secured a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Noel Damian Jr..

Despite the challenge ahead, Fernandez remained grounded, acknowledging Joven’s credentials as a multiple-time PCA Open champion and respected figure in Philippine tennis.

Fernandez also advanced in the doubles competition alongside his older brother, Loucas Fernandez. The duo defeated Russeiden Sardea and Marraphael Teng, 6-1, 6-3.

In other singles matches, 15th seed Francis Alcantara pulled off an upset against third seed John Benedict Aguilar, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. He advances to face sixth seed John Kendrick Bona, who rallied past Josshua Kinaadman.

Top seed Alberto Lim Jr. dominated his match, 6-1, 6-0, against Rafa Monte de Ramos and will next meet seventh seed Nilo Ledama.

Meanwhile, second seed Eric Olivarez Jr. cruised past Mac Alcoseba, 6-1, 6-2, setting up a clash with fifth seed Arthur Pantino, who also won convincingly.

In doubles action, top seeds Alcantara and Joven advanced to the next round after a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory over Alcoseba and Miguel Iglupas. They will face Christian Padilla and John Christopher Sonsona next.

The tournament offers PHP350,000 to the singles champion and PHP175,000 to the runner-up, while doubles winners will take home PHP80,000 and finalists PHP40,000.
