Manila – The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is planning to significantly expand the seating capacity of the Rizal Memorial Stadium as part of the ongoing rehabilitation of the historic sports complex.
Under the proposal, the stadium’s capacity could be doubled to around 25,000 seats from its current 12,873 all-seater configuration, which can accommodate up to 15,000 with standing room. The plan also includes restoring natural grass to replace the existing artificial turf.
The upgrade is aligned with international football requirements, particularly for clubs competing in AFC tournaments, which require natural grass pitches for higher-tier competitions.
Meanwhile, SM Prime Holdings is planning to build a new multi-sport arena inside the former Harrison Plaza site as part of its redevelopment project, which will be renamed SM Harrison.
The proposal was discussed during a meeting between PSC officials and SM Prime executives on Wednesday, as both parties explored a partnership aimed at transforming the area into a modern sports and lifestyle district.
SM Prime chairman Hans Sy expressed support for the initiative after visiting the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, noting the potential to enhance and elevate the historic area.
PSC chairman John Patrick Gregorio said the collaboration remains in the exploratory stage but could result in major improvements for both the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex and the nearby Harrison Plaza site, which are located within walking distance along Adriatico Street.
He emphasized that the project aims to balance heritage preservation with modern sports development, describing it as a timely and important partnership.
The planned SM Harrison facility will feature a FIBA-standard basketball court that can be converted into a multi-sport venue for volleyball, badminton, tennis, pickleball, padel, and table tennis. This positions it as a potential hub for both local and international sporting events.
While seating capacity details for the new arena have yet to be confirmed, the project is expected to complement nearby venues such as the Rizal Memorial Coliseum and Ninoy Aquino Stadium, further strengthening the area as a sports district.
The initiative is also tied to SM’s Active Hub sports and fitness program anniversary, reinforcing its long-term commitment to promoting sports and wellness.
Once completed, the combined developments are expected to transform the area into a world-class sports and tourism destination, blending historical significance with modern infrastructure while providing improved facilities for Filipino athletes and fans.
