Meta Platforms testing subscription tier for Instagram

SAN FRANCISCO — Meta Platforms confirmed that it is testing a paid subscription tier for Instagram, offering additional features for users, including the ability to discreetly view “Story” posts that normally disappear after 24 hours.

Subscribers will also gain more control over who can view photos or videos shared in Stories. The company said the new tier is currently being tested in a few countries worldwide, including Japan, Mexico, and the Philippines, with subscription pricing reportedly around $2 per month.

The move follows the company’s launch of ad-free paid versions of its platforms in the United Kingdom to comply with regional regulations. Other social media platforms such as Snapchat and X have also introduced premium subscription options in recent years.

Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, recently reported more than 25 million subscribers to its premium tier and projected around $1 billion in annual revenue. Instagram already allows content creators to offer exclusive content through paid subscriptions, and the new test may expand monetization options for both users and the platform.
