MANILA – Energy Secretary Sharon Garin underscored the crucial role of private sector collaboration in driving the country’s clean energy shift, as she joined President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in the ceremonial switch-on of two major solar projects in Tuy, Batangas.
The projects, developed by Citicore Renewable Energy Corporation (CRED), include the 125-megawatt (MW) Lumbangan solar power facility and the 72-MW Luntal solar power facility. According to the Department of Energy (DOE), these are the country’s first hybrid agro-solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects.
“By putting in place utility-scale solar facilities with battery storage and agrivoltaics, these projects set a national benchmark for how private innovation and public policy can work together to speed up our energy transition and deliver real benefits to communities,” Garin said.
Together, the two facilities are expected to generate up to 197 MW of clean energy, supported by a 320-megawatt-hour BESS that allows electricity supply beyond the usual 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. solar generation window.
Citicore earlier announced plans to add 5 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity within five years, further boosting the country’s energy mix. Garin said such projects will help the government reach its target of raising renewable energy’s share to 35 percent by 2030.
“Every megawatt we add from renewables, backed by storage and smart grid investments, means a more resilient, more affordable power system for Filipino families and businesses,” she said, adding that the DOE looks forward to more partnerships to accelerate the energy transition.
