San Pablo City Sets Guinness World Record in Mass Coconut Planting Drive

SAN PABLO CITY – The local government of San Pablo City has officially broken the Guinness World Record for the most people planting coconut seedlings simultaneously across multiple sites, surpassing the previous title held by Nagapattinam District in India.

With a mission to revive its legacy as the country’s top coconut producer and boost the local coconut industry, Mayor Najie Gapangada led the massive effort that saw 11,000 coconut seedlings planted within just 15 minutes across 12 villages.

The main planting site on Friday was an eight-hectare property owned by Philip Young, special assistant to Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. Thousands of volunteers—students, civic organizations, and government employees—joined forces to achieve the synchronized planting feat.

Seedlings were provided by the City Agriculturist Office in partnership with the Philippine Coconut Authority.

Mayor Gapangada emphasized that the record-breaking activity also serves as the start of a three-year coconut planting program aimed at restoring San Pablo City’s position as the Philippines’ number one coconut-producing hub.

“Planting coconuts is not just the responsibility of the government. Community participation is vital. Government and citizens must work together,” he said in a Facebook post.

Before the official awarding, Guinness adjudicator Swapnil Dangarikar validated the planting sites to confirm the record.
