Cignal bounces back, downs ZUS Coffee in PVL Invitational



MANILA – The Cignal HD Spikers snapped their losing streak Monday night after defeating ZUS Coffee, 22-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-19, to keep their bronze medal hopes alive in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Invitational Conference at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Erika Mae Santos spearheaded Cignal’s offense with 21 points, while Ma. Rochelle Lalongisip added 13 points built on 10 attacks and three blocks. Ernestine Tiamzon and rookie Erin May Pangilinan also chipped in 10 points apiece.

Cignal also welcomed back Alas Pilipinas standouts Vanessa Gandler, who contributed six points, and libero Dawn Catindig, who tallied 18 digs and 15 receptions.

Despite the loss, ZUS Coffee put up a spirited fight behind veterans Chai Troncoso, who registered 16 points and 11 digs, Kate Santiago with 14 points, and Wielyn Estoque with eight points, including two blocks. The Thunderbelles, however, remained winless in two games while missing key players Chinnie Arroyo, Jovelyn Gonzaga, AC Miner, Thea Gagate, and Cloanne Mondonedo.

Earlier in the day, the PLDT High Speed Hitters secured the first finals berth with a 25-20, 25-22, 25-23 sweep of Kobe Shinwa University. Savi Davison led PLDT with 17 points, supported by Alleiah Malaluan’s 12 and Mika Reyes’ 11.

Nagisa Komatsuda top-scored for the visiting Japanese team with 21 points, while Airisu Ishikawa finished with eight.
