MANILA – The Philippine Embassy in Washington DC has clarified that the United States continues to recognize dual citizenship, dismissing online rumors suggesting that holding another nationality could endanger one’s American citizenship.
In a statement released Saturday, the embassy said there have been no policy changes in the US despite circulating claims that new restrictions would require individuals to renounce other citizenships amid heightened immigration enforcement.
“The United States continues to allow dual citizenship, and there have been no changes to this policy,” the embassy said. It also encouraged eligible Filipinos not to be discouraged by misinformation and to apply for dual citizenship through the embassy or Philippine consulates across the US.
The clarification came as the embassy administered the oath to 15 new dual citizens at its chancery on Friday. The individuals had previously lost their Philippine citizenship after becoming naturalized American citizens.
Under Republic Act No. 9225, Filipinos who became naturalized citizens of another country may reacquire Philippine citizenship. Meanwhile, those born in the US to at least one Filipino parent are considered dual citizens at birth and are advised to report their birth to the nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate.
However, the embassy stressed that Filipinos who voluntarily renounce their Philippine citizenship cannot reacquire it under RA 9225, making such renunciation a permanent legal action.
The embassy also addressed reports about a pending bill in the United States Senate seeking to end dual citizenship in the US. It noted that the measure would still undergo extensive deliberations and may or may not advance, depending on congressional action.
Citing past legal precedent, the embassy pointed out that the Supreme Court of the United States as early as 1952 recognized dual citizenship as a lawful status. In the case of Kawakita v. United States, the Court stated that an individual may exercise rights and responsibilities in two countries, and asserting one citizenship does not automatically renounce the other.
The embassy reiterated its call for the public to rely on verified information and official advisories regarding citizenship matters.
