Marcos Bats for Stronger Gov’t-Private Sector Partnership to Boost Energy Security

MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Saturday reaffirmed the importance of sustained collaboration between the government and the private sector to ensure Filipinos have access to dependable, affordable, and widely available electricity.

The Chief Executive visited the exhibit of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) at the Meralco Theater in Pasig City, organized in line with his directive to implement immediate and practical measures addressing the country’s energy concerns.

Marcos commended Meralco for supporting the administration’s push to modernize the Philippine power sector, recognizing the utility firm’s vital role in advancing the national energy agenda.

“This administration will continue to work hand in hand with the private sector in crafting processes and policies that make electricity accessible, affordable, and reliable,” he said, describing the effort as part of a broader mission to build a nation anchored on stable energy systems, clear direction, and inclusive growth.

The President welcomed recent improvements in streamlining procedures aimed at maintaining a steady power supply and urged Filipinos—particularly those in remote and underserved communities—to take advantage of government-backed initiatives.

He emphasized that meaningful progress in the energy sector, and nation-building as a whole, depends on shared responsibility among stakeholders.

The event, mounted in partnership with the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), highlighted joint efforts to translate policy directions into tangible programs that benefit consumers.

Among the featured initiatives was the One Meralco Foundation’s solar-powered electrification program for low-income households and geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs) within the company’s franchise area.

The exhibit also showcased an electric tricycle charging station developed with the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Sustainable Livelihood Program and the Valenzuela City government.

Technology demonstrations included KLoad’s prepaid electricity system with balance alerts and automated notifications, as well as an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)-ready setup that enables remote meter reading and near real-time analytics. A smart-home model further illustrated energy integration among the grid, solar photovoltaic systems, and battery storage supported by AMI and net metering.

Meanwhile, Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGEN), a subsidiary of Meralco, presented its “Powering Better Tomorrow” portfolio focused on reliability, affordability, and sustainability. MTerra Solar, an MGEN affiliate, likewise highlighted its successful grid synchronization and energization, signaling readiness for connection to the Luzon grid.

The Marcos administration is targeting the closure of the country’s power gap by 2028 through intensified cooperation with private sector partners in the energy industry.
