MANILA – An injured reticulated python (Malayopython reticulatus) discovered after a grass fire caused by firecrackers and pyrotechnics during New Year celebrations has been turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for rescue and rehabilitation.
In a social media post on Wednesday, the DENR National Capital Region said its Metropolitan Environmental Office (MEO) received a report from officials of Barangay 177, where the injured snake was found.
Residents earlier reported a grass and garbage fire on Jan. 1, which authorities said was triggered by the use of fireworks and pyrotechnics during New Year revelries. The following day, community members spotted the python near the affected area, believing it had been harmed by the fire.
During initial observation, authorities noted burn injuries around the reptile’s mouth. Thinking it was already dead, residents temporarily placed the python in a container before preparing it for burial. Upon realizing that it was still alive, barangay officials immediately coordinated with the Enforcement Unit of MEO-North.
A retrieval operation was promptly conducted, and the wildlife specimen was safely transported to the Biodiversity Management Bureau, where it is now receiving medical care and undergoing rehabilitation.
Following the incident, the DENR-NCR urged the public to remain vigilant and to immediately report wildlife-related cases, particularly during festive periods when the use of fireworks is common. The agency also stressed that responsible use of pyrotechnics and timely coordination with authorities are crucial in protecting wildlife and preserving the environment.
