DTI Sets National Quality Standard for ‘Parol,’ Elevating Filipino Craftsmanship to Global Stage

MANILA — The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has officially launched the Philippine National Standard (PNS) for parol — the iconic Filipino Christmas lantern — ensuring higher quality, safety, and global competitiveness for one of the country’s most cherished symbols of holiday tradition.

The landmark standard was unveiled in San Fernando, Pampanga, widely celebrated as the “Home of the Giant Lanterns”, during a special event highlighting the city’s rich cultural heritage and its famed Giant Lantern Festival held every mid-December.

According to the DTI, the move aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s broader vision to empower local industries, strengthen the Tatak Pinoy brand, and protect Filipino consumers through quality assurance.

“More than ensuring product safety, these standards uplift our parol makers whose craftsmanship reflects Filipino pride,” said DTI Secretary Cristina Roque. “By guiding them toward quality and reliability, we empower their businesses to grow and thrive globally while protecting Filipino consumers.”

The PNS for parol was developed in partnership with UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE), emphasizing the government’s commitment to international collaboration and raising the benchmark for locally made products.

Assistant Secretary Regino Mallari Jr., head of the DTI Fair Trade Group, noted that the new standards not only guarantee safety and quality but also secure the sustainability of the country’s lantern-making industry, ensuring that future generations can continue this uniquely Filipino tradition with excellence.

The introduction of the PNS for parol marks a milestone in Philippine craftsmanship — a bright step forward in showcasing Filipino artistry, ingenuity, and festive spirit to the world.
