DOE Studies Energy Impact of Expanding Data Center Industry

MANILA – The Department of Energy (DOE) said Thursday that while supply remains sufficient to meet the growing demand of the energy-intensive data center industry, it is seeking the sector’s long-term roadmap to assess its full impact on the country’s power supply.

DOE Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara, speaking at the ABS-CBN News Channel forum “The Clean Energy Shift: Powering a Green Economy with Renewable Energy” in Quezon City, said the department is coordinating with the private sector to address the industry’s expanding power requirements.

She noted that data centers currently consume around 120 megawatts (MW), a figure projected to rise to about 500 MW in the coming years. This, she said, can be supported by the DOE’s over 1,300 awarded renewable energy (RE) service contracts with a total capacity exceeding 150 gigawatts.

“To us, this is exciting, especially with the global shift into artificial intelligence. It will be good if we have the energy to power this up,” Guevara said.

She added that the DOE is awaiting the Data Center Association of the Philippines’ roadmap report, expected within the year. “We have to make sure we don’t put up too many power plants. We just need to be able to meet their demands,” she explained, stressing the importance of balancing supply and demand to avoid disruptions from plant outages.
