DA-BFAR Marks 62nd Fish Conservation Week with Renewed Push for Sustainable Fisheries

MANILA – The Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA–BFAR) successfully wrapped up the 62nd Fish Conservation Week held from September 15 to 19, 2025, underscoring the importance of protecting marine resources and ensuring food security under the theme “Pangisdaang Masagana, Sapat na Isda sa Bawat Pamilya.”

The celebration opened with creative performances by DA–BFAR employees and the recognition of participating families as “FISHFAM of the Day” during the kickoff at Fisher Mall in Quezon City.

“Fish Conservation Week is a reminder of our mandate to safeguard and preserve our country’s aquatic wealth. Sustainable and abundant fisheries production means stable, affordable, and sufficient fish supply for every Filipino household,” said Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr., through BFAR Assistant Director for Technical Services Isidro Velayo.

Highlights of the week included the ArtSea: A FishCon Duo Exhibit, which showcased artworks from youth competitions on fisheries awareness and coastal resiliency, and the launch of the Blue Fair Fish Project by GIZ Philippines—an initiative against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The celebration concluded with the Gawad Parangal at Pasasalamat sa mga Kabalikat ng Pangisdaan at Luxent Hotel, honoring LGUs, state universities and colleges, Fisheries Scholarship Program scholars, Fisheries Board topnotchers, media partners, and fisherfolk groups for their vital contributions to the sector.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, fisheries production in the first half of 2025 reached a six-year high, driven by gains in aquaculture and municipal fishing—boosting fisherfolk incomes, strengthening food supply, and contributing to the agriculture sector’s recovery.
