Masbate Residents Get Access to ?20 Rice Under DA Relief Program After ‘Opong’

LEGAZPI CITY – Families in storm-hit Masbate province have begun availing themselves of the ₱20 per kilo rice program under the Department of Agriculture’s “Benteng Bigas Meron Na” (BBM Na) initiative, launched to assist communities affected by Severe Tropical Storm Opong (international name Bualoi).

According to provincial agriculturist Engr. Sheryl Almario, at least 200 residents bought 10 kilos each during a half-day distribution on Tuesday.

“Many lined up to buy our ₱20 rice. Everyone can participate as long as they bring a valid ID for documentation and the required payment. So far, we’ve sold 200 kilos, and more will be available tomorrow,” Almario said.

The provincial agriculture office has 300 sacks of rice (50 kg each) sourced from the National Food Authority (NFA), with an additional 1,000 bags expected from Sorsogon and other provinces.

The DA-Bicol also continues to monitor rice prices in Masbate, which remains under a state of calamity due to storm damage.

Regional Executive Director Rodel Tornilla said relief was also extended to DA employees in Masbate on September 28 after travel routes reopened.

To ensure sustainable food access, the DA-Bicol Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division has partnered with Farmers’ Cooperatives and Associations (FCAs) in Albay, Camarines Sur, and Sorsogon for ongoing Kadiwa selling operations in the province.
