Philippines Rises to 50th in 2025 Global Innovation Index

MANILA – The Philippines climbed three spots to rank 50th in the 2025 Global Innovation Index (GII), reflecting the country’s strengthening push in science, technology, and innovation, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) announced Wednesday.

The GII, produced annually by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) with global partners, ranks 139 economies based on innovation inputs such as human capital, research and development (R&D), and institutional strength, as well as outputs like knowledge creation and technology adoption.

From 59th in 2022 and 56th in 2023, the Philippines has steadily improved its standing, which DOST said “underscores the growing role of science, technology, and innovation in shaping the country’s economic and social future.”

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. emphasized the importance of turning research into tangible products, services, and industries that uplift communities. “Science, technology, and innovation must deliver solutions and create opportunities for every Filipino,” he said.

In recent years, DOST has funded over 3,000 R&D projects across 17 regions, provided scholarships to more than 45,000 students, and continued nurturing 6,000 scholars annually through the Philippine Science High School System. It also co-leads the DOST-PCCI Business Technology Hub with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, linking research outputs with industry needs for commercialization.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to positioning the Philippines as a rising innovation hub in Asia, anchored on inclusive growth and technology-driven development.
