DA-Cordillera Debunks Claims of Formalin in Baguio Sayote

BAGUIO CITY – The Department of Agriculture in the Cordillera region assured the public that sayote from Baguio is safe to eat and free from preservatives, dismissing online rumors that the vegetable is treated with formalin.

“We firmly deny this allegation. No formalin or any harmful substance is applied to Baguio sayote,” the DA said in a statement on Wednesday.

The agency emphasized that sayote is naturally long-lasting, able to remain fresh for up to one month at room temperature, especially under the Cordillera’s cool climate.

DA-Cordillera Director Jennilyn Dawayan explained that the vegetable’s firm structure and low surface moisture contribute to its natural longevity. She also credited the region’s high elevation, fertile soil, and cold weather for allowing sayote to thrive without the need for chemicals.

Dawayan added that monitoring of local farms shows no reports or practices involving the use of preservatives such as formalin before delivery.

The DA urged the public to be cautious of misleading social media posts and assured consumers that vegetables from the Cordillera are produced under strict safety protocols and continuous monitoring.
