DA Distributes 50 Cattle to Agusan Sur Farmers to Boost Organic Livestock Farming

BUTUAN CITY – Fifty farmers in Sibagat, Agusan del Sur received cattle from the Department of Agriculture (DA) 13–Caraga through the Bureau of Animal Industry, as part of efforts to expand organic livestock farming in the region.

The beneficiaries, residents of six barangays—Culambugan, New Tubigon, Anahawan, Afga, Poblacion, and Ilihan—were selected based on their capacity to maintain pasture areas free from chemical contamination.

“This dispersal strengthens Sibagat’s role as one of the country’s identified organic municipalities,” said Rodolfo Domingo, Agriculturist II of DA-13’s Organic Agriculture Program. He emphasized that the cattle must graze only on chemical-free grasses to meet organic standards.

The ₱2.5 million worth of cattle were distributed under a dispersal scheme in coordination with the local government, which identifies eligible farmers. The program also promotes sustainability, as calves from the initial batch will be passed on to the next set of farmer-beneficiaries.

Another group of Sibagat farmers is currently seeking accreditation under the Bureau of Agricultural and Fisheries Standards’ Participatory Guarantee System, which certifies organic products for market distribution.

One beneficiary, Pablo, 35, from New Tubigon, welcomed the program, citing its economic and health benefits. “In organic farming, we spend less, avoid harmful chemicals, and promote healthier lifestyles through organic food,” he said.

The turnover ceremony was led by DA-13 Regional Technical Director Rebecca Atega, together with Sibagat local officials.
