TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has released ₱22.42 million in grants to strengthen livelihood projects and help combat hunger across Eastern Visayas.

From January to September, the program supported 1,157 individuals belonging to 60 Sustainable Livelihood Program Associations (SLPAs) in economically challenged communities, according to DSWD-8 (Eastern Visayas) information officer Jonalyndie Chua.

“The Zero Hunger Program, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, seeks to eradicate hunger and malnutrition while promoting sustainable agriculture by 2030,” Chua said. “It envisions a future where everyone has access to nutritious food and sustainable economic opportunities.”

The provincial allocation of funds includes ₱3.4 million for Eastern Samar, ₱7.66 million for Leyte, and ₱3.78 million each for Northern Samar, Samar, and Southern Leyte.

Among the livelihood ventures funded are urban vegetable farming, tilapia production, crop cultivation, food vending, rice retailing, motorcycle transport services, Piso WiFi businesses, and general merchandise trading.

The initiative contributes to the Philippines’ commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 2, which targets ending hunger, achieving food security and improved nutrition, and advancing sustainable agriculture by 2030.
