MANILA – Türkiye is closely monitoring developments in the Bangsamoro Region following the Moro Islamic Liberation Front’s (MILF) suspension of its decommissioning process, Turkish Ambassador to the Philippines Niyazi Evren Akyol said Friday.
In a statement, Akyol affirmed Türkiye’s readiness “to extend any support that may be required” by the parties, stressing that Ankara remains a committed partner in the peace process.
The envoy commended the progress achieved in the Mindanao peace efforts but acknowledged that certain issues still need to be resolved.
“At this point, most importantly, we are glad to observe that all sides are fully committed to the success of the peace process,” he said.
“Within this framework, we are closely following the developments concerning the process, including the decommissioning aspect, and believe that the issue should be discussed in depth by the parties through constructive dialogue,” he added.
Türkiye has long played an active role in the peace process in Mindanao, being part of both the International Contact Group and the Third-Party Monitoring Team. It also headed the Independent Decommissioning Body since its establishment in 2014.
On Aug. 16, MILF Chair Alhadj Murad Ebrahim issued a memorandum directing all commanders and members to refrain from participating in any decommissioning or normalization activities of the government “without prior written approval” from the MILF.
This order stemmed from a July 19 resolution by the MILF Central Committee, which temporarily suspended the implementation of the fourth and final phase of the decommissioning process.
Despite the current challenges, Presidential Peace Adviser Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. described the Bangsamoro peace process as “robust and dynamic,” emphasizing that “open and sincere dialogue” remains the best way forward.
