MANILA – Newly crowned Palarong Pambansa champion National University Nazareth School (NUNS) kicked off its title bid in the 2025 Shakey’s Girls Volleyball Invitational League (SGVIL) Rising Stars Cup Division 1 with twin victories Monday at the La Salle Green Hills Gym.
UAAP Season 87 MVP Sam Cantada scored seven points in leading the reigning UAAP champion NUNS to a 25-19, 23 win over Far Eastern University-Diliman, bannered by Ifunanya Udeagbala, in the morning.
The Lady Bullpups also won their afternoon match against the St. John's Institute-Bacolod Falcons, 25-23, 25-14, with Cantada scoring 10 points while Jenelyn Jacob and Raine Alonzo adding eight points apiece.
NUNS will face University of the Philippines Integrated School (0-3) and University of Sto. Tomas (2-1) Tuesday to wrap the Pool D play.
FEU-D, denied of an outright quarterfinal berth, has a 3-1 win-loss record while SJI sport a 1-3 slate.
Meanwhile, Bacolod Tay Tung defeated Bethel Academy, 25-14, 25-16, and De La Salle-Lipa, 25-18, 25-18, in Pool B.
The Thunderbolts, runners up to the Lady Bullpups at the Palaro, will meet Holy Rosary College (0-2) and Chiang Kai Shek (2-1) also Tuesday.
De La Salle-Lipa (1-1) downed Chiang Kai Shek, 25-17, 25-17, for a 1-1 card in the other Pool B match.
In Pool C, Arellano University secured its third straight win at the expense of Corpus Christi School, 25-13, 25-15, to join King’s Montessori School (3-1) in the next round.
Inaugural champion California Academy rallied past De La Salle Zobel-A, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22, to improve at 2-2. De La Salle Zobel-A suffered its second loss in three matches.
In Pool A, Lyceum of the Philippines University triumped over Naga College Foundation, 18-25, 25-20, 25-19, for its second win againt two losses.
In Division 2, Miriam College stunned unbeaten La Salle Green Hills, 25-23, 16-25, 25-20, to keep its playoffs hopes alive.
The Maria Katipuneras secured their first win in three outings while the Greenies absorbed their first loss against three starts.
